Lancashire Councillor Resigns Over ‘Good Riddance’ Comment on Charlie Kirk’s Assassination

A Lancashire councillor has resigned after posting on social media that the assassination of US conservative activist Charlie Kirk was “good riddance.”

Fiona Wild, who represented Lanehead ward as an independent on Burnley Council, sparked outrage after writing that Kirk “made himself a target and brought this on himself.” The post, which has since been deleted, drew widespread condemnation.

Kirk, 31, a close ally of former US President Donald Trump and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed at a Utah college on Wednesday. Authorities say the suspect remains at large, with no motive yet established.

Burnley Council confirmed Wild’s resignation on Friday, stressing that it “does not condone the comments” and is investigating complaints over the post.

Councillor Jamie McGowan, leader of Burnley Council’s Conservative group, called for her to step down, describing the remarks as “disgusting” and showing “a nasty side I didn’t know she had.”

Wild, a former Labour representative, has not responded to requests for comment.

Kirk rose to prominence as a right-wing commentator and youth activist, frequently clashing with liberal audiences on US campuses and hosting a popular daily podcast. His assassination has sent shockwaves through US conservative circles and beyond.
