The Katsina State Government has unveiled a fleet of hybrid-electric buses as part of Governor Dikko Radda’s drive to modernise public transportation and promote environmental sustainability across the state.
A hybrid-electric bus combines an electric motor with a smaller-than-normal internal combustion engine, offering improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
The unveiling ceremony took place at the Abuja facility of Woerka Nigeria Limited, a Chinese firm collaborating on the project. The initiative follows Governor Radda’s visit to China last year, where he led a delegation to secure partnerships with leading agricultural and industrial equipment manufacturers.
President of Ben 10 Equipment Company and a key partner in the project, Oshi Bernard, commended the governor’s vision and leadership, describing him as “hard-working, industrious, focused, and dedicated.”
He added, “The initiative is expected to transform intra-city movement in Katsina, Daura, and Funtua, with plans for future expansion across the state. We want to especially thank Governor Radda for giving us this great opportunity to promote a world-class project.”
Bernard explained that the new hybrid buses, powered by both fuel and electricity, would help reduce carbon emissions, lower fuel costs, and improve mobility for residents.
Project Manager of Zhong Tong Bus, Wei Yanbin, revealed that the government would procure 30 city buses in the first phase of the project. He also disclosed plans to construct three bus terminals and 60 bus stops along designated routes.
“This project will commence this October and will be delivered within six months,” Yanbin stated.
Highlighting the environmental benefits, he said the buses would integrate diesel and electric power to minimise fuel consumption and emissions. Each bus, he added, can transport between 45 and 55 passengers.
The initiative marks a major step toward sustainable urban mobility in Katsina State, aligning with global efforts to adopt cleaner, greener public transportation systems.
