In a decisive move to safeguard the environment and protect public health, the Lagos State Government has officially commenced the ban on the sale and use of Styrofoam and single-use plastics across the state.
According to Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the enforcement begins today, July 1, 2025.
“Many believed that after the last period of grace, the state government would succumb to blackmail and the spread of half-truths to extend the deadline. But this is a total no,” Wahab stated.
The Commissioner emphasized that the decision is driven by the need to ensure the safety of lives, properties, and the overall well-being of residents.
“There is no going back. Anyone found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the state’s environmental laws,” he warned.
The ban aims to curb the widespread environmental hazards caused by non-biodegradable materials, which have contributed significantly to flooding, marine pollution, and public health risks in Lagos.
Residents, businesses, and food vendors have been urged to adopt alternative, eco-friendly packaging options as the government intensifies efforts toward a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos
