Since his appointment in October 2023, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has led bold reforms to promote sustainability, digital inclusion, and stronger governance in Nigeria’s telecom sector.
Under his leadership, the NCC is aligning with global ESG standards and has made corporate governance a top priority. Maida emphasized this at the 2024 Corporate Governance Conference, calling it “the foundation for the industry’s sustainability.”
A major part of the push includes mandatory compliance with the NCC’s Corporate Governance Code, with annual reporting required from licensees. This effort supports Nigeria’s broader goal of full ESG compliance by 2027.
To expand connectivity, the NCC launched the National Broadband Alliance for Nigeria (NBAN), aiming for 70% broadband penetration by end-2025, with minimum speeds of 25 Mbps (urban) and 10 Mbps (rural). It’s also promoting digital literacy through partnerships with institutions like Nile University and programs like ADAPTI and DJCY, which have trained thousands of youths.
The NCC is working with the Central Bank of Nigeria to curb mobile fraud and has introduced the e-Health Project in Akure to improve rural healthcare access through ICT.
In a consumer-focused move, telecom operators are now required to compensate users for prolonged outages. A new Major Outage Reporting Portal ensures transparency and accountability.
Amid inflation and rising costs, the NCC approved a 50% cap on tariff increases in early 2025—half the amount originally proposed by telcos.
Through these initiatives, Maida is reshaping the industry into a resilient, inclusive, and digitally driven ecosystem.
