Indeed, Gbajabiamila’s journey in both politics and life may seem daunting, but it should not be reason enough for many of his colleagues in politics, and even technocrats, to subtly disdain his character, position, achievements, and continuously strive for his downfall.
While his background and ascent in the political and governance spheres may appear lofty to some of his peers who have yet to grasp the key to his sustained success, numerous Nigerian youths regard him as a role model, someone upon whom a new Nigeria can build its foundation.
Unfortunately, in the realm of public discourse, politics, and occasionally governance, distinguishing between truth and deception can be challenging, leading to instances of ‘false positives,’ ‘false negatives,’ and ‘misinterpretations.’
Since assuming the role of Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2023, numerous unfounded accusations and allegations have been leveled against Gbajabiamila and his office, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
For an individual of his stature, who has traversed the corridors of power as Minority Leader and House Leader in the Nigerian House of Representatives, and later as Speaker, maintaining an untarnished record prompts questions about the motives behind the campaign of slander and falsehood.
Various accusations, ranging from assertions of impropriety with a semblance of certainty to allegations of financial inducements and manipulation, continue to surface like the mythical Medusa’s head, despite lacking substantial evidence.
At one point in 2023, it was claimed that Gbajabiamila orchestrated a cabal in Aso Rock, while other times, individuals seeking board appointments allegedly bribed him for influence. More recently, he’s accused of interfering in the duties of a Special Investigator appointed by his principal, allegedly diverting a significant sum of $30 billion in recovered funds for personal gain.
Yet, these allegations remain unsubstantiated since his appointment over seven months ago. Such claims have been unequivocally debunked as malicious fabrications aimed at tarnishing the reputation of a dedicated public servant.
A closer examination of Gbajabiamila’s ascent and 16-year tenure in the House of Representatives reveals no history of corruption or misconduct. Throughout his time in the House, he served as Minority Leader from June 2007 to June 2015 and as House Leader in the 8th assembly, never once facing accusations or indictments for fraudulent practices.
Even during his four-year tenure as Speaker, overseeing more than 800 agencies, he remained free of any corrupt or fraudulent activities.
One is left to ponder the motive behind the relentless campaign of defamation against Gbajabiamila for simply agreeing to continue serving Nigeria alongside his mentor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Despite playing a pivotal role in the emergence of the current Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, Gbajabiamila has refrained from instigating conflicts between the executive and judiciary branches. Apart from addressing matters of national interest as directed by his principal, he has steered clear of domains beyond his jurisdiction.
Hence, one wonders who is so fervently targeting Gbajabiamila with flawed claims and allegations, only to be met with factual refutations time and again.
Gbajabiamila’s journey to becoming Chief of Staff to the President has been characterized by dignity, integrity, steadfastness, and an unblemished track record. Yet, some corrupt individuals with ulterior motives seek to disrupt the relationship between Tinubu and Gbajabiamila, obstructing justice or their fate.
Regarding the recent allegation of diverting $30 billion, it remains a product of individuals driven by animosity towards Gbajabiamila, as the Chief of Staff has consistently demonstrated his commitment to refraining from interfering in investigations initiated by his principal or security agencies.
With nothing to hide except his impeccable attire, it is evident that many are attempting to drive a wedge between Gbajabiamila and Tinubu due to his close relationship with the president and the influence he wields.
