Dr. Olayide Owolabi Adelami has been confirmed as the new Deputy Governor of Ondo State by the State House of Assembly, barely 24 hours after his nomination was submitted for screening.
The vacancy for the Deputy Governor arose following the passing of former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and the subsequent appointment of Honorable Lucky Aiyedatiwa as Governor.
Adelami’s confirmation took place during a plenary session chaired by the Speaker of the Assembly, Honorable Olamide Oladiji, following the submission and consideration of a report by the House’s selection committee led by Oladiji.
Prior to the confirmation, the Assembly conducted a screening exercise for the nominees at the assembly complex. The Clerk of the House, Jaiyeola Benjamin, read the letter sent by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, recommending the nominees for the vacant Deputy Governor position.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Prince Abayomi Akinruntan, who presented the committee’s report, recommended Adelami’s confirmation, stating that he had satisfactorily responded to all questions raised during the screening process and possessed the necessary qualifications, experience, and temperament for the role.
The Majority Leader of the House, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, moved the motion for the report to be considered and the nominees to be confirmed, which was seconded by Felix Afe representing Akoko North West Two.
Following the confirmation, Speaker Oladiji congratulated Adelami and urged him to perform his duties diligently, assuring him of the Assembly’s support for the executive to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people.
In his response, Adelami expressed gratitude to Governor Aiyedatiwa for nominating him and appreciated the lawmakers for their efforts during the screening process. He emphasized the importance of promoting understanding between the arms of government and pledged to prioritize this during his tenure.
Adelami, a retired Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly, hails from Owo in the Owo Local Government area of the State.
