NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms, Rainfall Nationwide Monday to Wednesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country between Monday and Wednesday.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet said the northern region would experience isolated thunderstorms with light rains on Monday morning over parts of Adamawa and Taraba, spreading later to Kaduna, Gombe, Kebbi, Zamfara, Bauchi, Borno and other states.

For the central region, a cloudy atmosphere with sunshine intervals is expected, with prospects of thunderstorms over Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Plateau, Kogi and Benue.

In the southern region, thunderstorms and light rains are expected in the morning over Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom, with moderate rains anticipated across most parts of the region later in the day.

On Tuesday, NiMet projected partly cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine across the north, alongside isolated thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto and Bauchi. The central states are also expected to record thunderstorms, while the south will experience moderate rains, with possible flash floods in Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Rivers.

For Wednesday, the agency forecast thunderstorms with light rains in the morning over Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Borno, Adamawa and Taraba, with isolated thunderstorms expected across most of the north later in the day. The central region is also expected to witness thunderstorms with moderate rains, while the south will experience rainfall over Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River in the morning, intensifying across the region by evening.

NiMet cautioned residents of flood-prone areas to activate emergency response plans and advised motorists to exercise caution while driving in the rain.

The agency also warned farmers against applying fertilisers and pesticides immediately before rainfall to prevent nutrient loss, and urged households to secure loose objects, unplug electrical appliances, and avoid sheltering under trees during storms.

Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective planning.

NiMet further encouraged the public to stay informed by regularly checking its website and weather updates.
