The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting tourism and attracting investors to drive economic growth, particularly in the food and hospitality sectors.
This assurance was given over the weekend by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, at the official commissioning of Burger King’s new outlet located at 18B Lalubu Street, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.
The event marked the launch of the 23rd Burger King restaurant in Nigeria, extending the brand’s footprint to seven states across the federation.
Speaking at the inauguration, Salako-Oyedele noted that the current administration is making strategic efforts to increase the state’s internally generated revenue through tourism and associated industries. She commended Burger King for its innovation and commitment to quality, assuring the company of the state government’s continuous support.
“This administration is focused on creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive, especially in sectors that support tourism and hospitality. We are pleased to welcome a global brand like Burger King to Abeokuta, and we look forward to the economic ripple effects it will create in our state,” the Deputy Governor said.
Also speaking at the event, Managing Director/CEO of Burger King Nigeria, Mr. Rushde Ibrahim, stated that the decision to open a restaurant in Abeokuta was driven by strong demand from local residents.
“We received several requests from customers who had experienced our services in other cities and wanted the same in Abeokuta. Our research also showed that the food and beverage market in this city is rapidly expanding,” Ibrahim explained.
Highlighting the unique features of the new outlet, Ibrahim announced that the Abeokuta branch is Burger King’s first Green restaurant in Nigeria. “This restaurant is built using ship containers and operates with a gas-powered generator and air conditioning units. It is diesel-free, reflecting our commitment to sustainability,” he said.
He added that the menu includes globally acclaimed items like the signature Whopper burger, alongside local offerings such as potato cubes, plantain cubes, sweet potato fries, and suya a traditional delicacy.
“This is more than just a burger restaurant; it’s an experience. We’ve blended global standards with local flavors to give Abeokuta something truly special,” Ibrahim added.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by dignitaries including the traditional ruler of Papalanto, Oba Abdul Gafar; the Gbadegesin of Egbaland, Chief Mutiu Adebowale; and the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Olatunji Odunlami.
