The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has strongly condemned the weekend attacks in Yelewata village, Benue State, North Central Nigeria, where scores of civilians were reportedly killed in their sleep and many others displaced.
In a statement delivered by Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, Guterres expressed deep concern over the violence and called for those responsible to be swiftly apprehended.
“We’re monitoring the situation closely. The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope those responsible for this violence will be found and brought to justice,” Haq said.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also denounced the violence, urging all leaders and residents of the state to embrace peace, love, and mutual understanding. The President is scheduled to visit Benue on Wednesday as part of renewed efforts to restore peace and address the persistent communal conflicts in the region.
During his visit, President Tinubu is expected to engage with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, political leaders, religious figures, community elders, and youth groups, to explore sustainable solutions to the ongoing hostilities.
The President extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and all those affected by the tragic events.
