The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended Ms. Theresa Ushie, Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, for a period of three months following allegations of misconduct and corrupt practices.
The decision was reached after the House considered a resolution passed by the Bekwarra Local Government Legislative Council earlier this week.
In addition to the suspension, the Assembly has constituted a committee to investigate the allegations leveled against Ms. Ushie. This follows an earlier attempt by councilors three months ago to impeach the chairman over similar accusations, including corruption, misconduct, and abuse of office.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, who presided over the debate, said the action was in line with Section 14(3) of the Cross River Local Government Laws, 2025. He announced that during the suspension period, the Vice Chairman, Mr. Egbung Odama, will assume leadership of the council in an acting capacity.
Ayambem also urged the investigative panel to conduct a fair and thorough inquiry into the matter.
