Top figures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including sitting governors, ex-governors, and influential party leaders, are meeting behind closed doors in Abuja to address deepening internal divisions and the spate of defections threatening the party’s stability ahead of the 2027 elections.
The high-level gathering, convened by PDP Governors Forum Chairman and Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, is ongoing at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.
It aims to forge a path toward party unity, resolve internal leadership disputes, and strategize for upcoming polls, including the off-season governorship election in Anambra.
Among the key attendees are FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), as well as former Senate President Bukola Saraki and several ex-governors such as Liyel Imoke, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
However, notable absences — including Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Bayelsa’s Douye Diri, Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, and Taraba’s Agbu Kefas — highlight growing cracks within the party ranks.
Sources say the agenda includes addressing disputes in the National Working Committee, particularly over the roles of the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, and the National Secretary. Deliberations may also touch on coalition talks with other opposition parties or a renewed focus on internal consolidation.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to significantly influence the PDP’s direction and cohesion as it braces for critical electoral battles and seeks to reposition itself as a viable opposition force.
