Newly sworn-in Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has pledged to build on the legacies of his predecessor, the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
Speaking at his inauguration alongside his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, at the Akure Stadium, Aiyedatiwa expressed deep sorrow that Akeredolu was not alive to witness his swearing-in as the 7th governor of the state.
In his inaugural speech, Aiyedatiwa paid glowing tribute to Akeredolu’s contributions to the development of Ondo State, stating that his dedication and selflessness left a lasting legacy.
“Permit me to express special gratitude to my immediate predecessor, our visionary leader, the late Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON.
We must not forget this courageous and personable leader who literally emptied himself in the service of Ondo State and Nigeria. His legacy continues to inspire us to build upon the foundations he laid.”
Aiyedatiwa recalled that during Akeredolu’s second-term inauguration, the late governor had made a prophetic declaration about his future leadership.
“I am particularly indebted to him for choosing me as his deputy and for his public and undisguised prophetic declaration at this very podium four years ago.
I must say that I am deeply pained that this great leader, who saw tomorrow, is not here with us to witness this momentous occasion.”
The governor also acknowledged the contributions of the state’s founding fathers and former governors, recognizing their efforts in shaping Ondo’s development over the past 49 years.
“Their selfless service, vision, and leadership have laid the groundwork for the progress we enjoy today. This moment reminds us of the struggles of our past, the sacrifices of our heroes, and the resilience of our people.”
Aiyedatiwa assured the people of an inclusive government, emphasizing that no one will be discriminated against based on political, cultural, religious, gender, or ethnic affiliations.
He also extended a hand of fellowship to the opposition parties, urging them to join his administration in developing Ondo State.
“We have no need for unnecessary political distractions that cost us time, resources, and energy. These should instead be redirected for the accelerated development of our state. There is room enough for all.”
The governor highlighted his administration’s achievements and future commitments in key areas, including:
Agriculture
Healthcare
Revenue generation
Urban renewal
Rural road construction
Education
Employment and entrepreneurship
“We have positively impacted the state in these sectors, and we assure you that the overwhelming renewed mandate you have given us has placed a greater responsibility on us. We promise never to rest on our oars.”
The inauguration ceremony was graced by top political figures, including:
APC National Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji
Former Governors of Osun and Ogun States, Chief Bisi Akande and Chief Olusegun Osoba
