Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed to establish cottage industries and provide essential social amenities to create employment opportunities and improve wealth creation across the state.
The governor made this commitment during the inauguration of the 13.985-kilometer Bori Internal Roads project in Khana Local Government Area on Tuesday.
The event, held in front of Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic in Bori Town, underscored the administration’s focus on infrastructural development. Bori serves as the headquarters of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District, encompassing Khana, Gokana, Tai, Eleme, Oyigbo, Andoni, and Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Areas.
Governor Fubara emphasized the need for unity and collective effort in driving development in Khana and the broader Rivers South-East Senatorial District. He highlighted that Bori, one of the state’s oldest districts, has yet to achieve its potential as a thriving urban center, due to the lack of political will in previous administrations.
“We must develop this district,” the governor said. “Beyond roads, we will invest in hospitals, schools, and cottage industries to ensure that development in Bori is comprehensive. Employment opportunities will bring rapid growth to this area, and we must achieve this together.”
He also urged the people of Bori and Ogoni to be welcoming to strangers, highlighting the role of inclusivity in fostering development.
“Our Polytechnic here used to be the best, but it faced decline because of how we interact with strangers. We must change that attitude. Accommodating others is key to development.”
Governor Fubara expressed disappointment with political leaders who, instead of advancing their communities, engage in activities that undermine development. He cautioned against those who prioritize personal gains over the collective good.
“My interest in this Senatorial District is genuine. The success of this district is my success,” he declared. “I pity those who act as agents of destruction, undermining efforts to improve their own communities.”
The governor announced plans to commence the second phase of the Bori Internal Roads project, ensuring further infrastructural enhancements. He assured residents that the Bori Zonal Hospital would be among the first healthcare facilities inaugurated under his administration to improve health services in the area.
Performing the inauguration, Prince Uche Secondus, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), hailed the project as a “miracle” and a significant facelift for Bori Town.
He praised Governor Fubara for his humility, respect for elders, and dedication to the state’s urban renewal policy, which aims to transform communities into thriving urban centers.
“The test of a leader is overcoming challenges with faith,” Secondus remarked. “Governor Fubara has shown resilience and commitment to uplifting the state.”
Providing an overview of the project, Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Barrister Elloka Tasie-Amadi, explained that the 23 roads span a total of 13.985 kilometers and include 10,000 meters of drainage.
These roads were built with robust specifications, including 150mm stone base, 50mm binder course, and 50mm wearing course. With functional drainage systems, the roads are designed to last for years,” Tasie-Amadi noted.
The inauguration marked another milestone in Governor Fubara’s agenda to foster economic growth and improve the quality of life for Rivers State residents.
