A woman in Anambra arrested for attempting to sell her grandsons

The Anambra State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, has apprehended Chinyere Chukwu, 38, for attempting to sell two of her grandsons. Chukwu, a mother of eleven from Ozubulu but apprehended in Okija, was arrested alongside her 17-year-old daughter, Joy Chukwu, who is the mother of the boys.

According to New Telegraph reports, Chukwu was captured by state command operatives after Hon Ify Obinabo, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, disguised herself as a buyer for the children upon learning of the scheme.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Commissioner’s spokesperson, Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, stated that the suspects justified their actions due to Nigeria’s current economic challenges.

Ikeanyionwu said: “Chinyere explained that she had 11 kids and couldn’t cater for them, hence her decision.

“The suspect said that since they were boys they were kept at the price of N1 million each but after serious bargaining, the commissioner opted to N1.8 million for both children.

“She said she developed an interest in selling the children after her neighbour successfully sold one of her kids. She said this was her first attempt at the business.”

Further investigation uncovered that despite having only two children with her late husband, the suspect bore the remaining nine with different boyfriends after his demise.

Ikeanyionwu revealed that the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs has directed that the suspect’s other children be placed under the care of the state government for proper support, and Chukwu’s neighbor be arrested for engaging in similar activities.
