ARISE TV Anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, Killed in Abuja Robbery Attack

Armed robbers have killed ARISE Television News anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, during an attack on her residence in Katampe, Abuja. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.

In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of the station’s management, ARISE News described Maduagwu popularly known as Sommie as a cherished colleague and vibrant broadcaster whose work resonated with audiences.

“Sommie was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers,” the statement read. “Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”

Maduagwu, aged 29, joined ARISE News as an energetic broadcaster and was also a trained lawyer. Colleagues described her as professional, supportive, and deeply committed to her craft.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched a full investigation into the incident. Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, directed tactical teams including the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Special Intelligence Unit, and scene-of-crime experts to take over the case.

Police sources disclosed that Maduagwu lived alone in Katampe, while her parents reside in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Divisional Police Officer for Katampe, CSP Sadiq Abubakar, confirmed that preliminary investigations had begun.

FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, also confirmed that tactical units had been deployed, stressing the command’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
