The Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI) has called on the Federal Government to design a proper transition plan to guide contractors in the switch from asphalt to concrete road construction across Nigeria.
Speaking at the 69th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the federation in Abuja, FOCI President and Chairman-in-Council, Chief Vincent Barrah, said while members were ready for innovation, an abrupt switch could destabilize the industry.
“You cannot switch overnight. Concrete roads require different designs, equipment, and training. Our members are prepared, but there has to be a clear plan and enough time to adapt,” Barrah stressed.
He emphasized that FOCI contractors possess the manpower, expertise, and equipment to deliver world-class projects, whether in asphalt or concrete, provided there is fairness and clarity in project execution.
The umbrella body of civil engineering and building contractors also raised concerns about contract administration, re-awarding of projects, contract conditions, and delayed payments, which it said had affected both companies and workers.
“Our members have constructed roads that have lasted 20, 30, even 40 years, and are still in use. We want to be fairly recognised for the quality of work we deliver,” Barrah said.
Commending the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his recognition of FOCI’s contributions, Barrah contrasted Wike’s approach with other ministries.
“While another ministry is terminating the contracts of our members on the pages of newspapers for poor performance, the Honourable Minister of the FCT has been inaugurating projects constructed by our members. Our members are impressed,” he stated.
Barrah added that without Wike’s patronage, the construction sector could have faced greater instability, including job losses.
