The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political parties against the use of provocative or abusive language during campaigns for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, issued the warning in Abuja. He noted that, in line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 8 of the election timetable, campaigns officially commenced on Wednesday and will run until midnight on February 19, 2026.
Olumekun reminded political actors that Sections 92 and 93 of the Electoral Act make it unlawful to engage in hate speech, physical attacks, or destruction of opponents’ campaign materials. He further stressed that all parties and candidates must be granted equal access to public facilities for rallies, media appearances, and outdoor advertising.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act prohibits the use of incumbency to the advantage or disadvantage of any party or candidate,” he added.
The FCT Area Council election has been scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.
