The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) has extended its strike ultimatum to the Federal Government by two weeks.
The unions had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum over unresolved welfare concerns, threatening a nationwide strike if their demands were not addressed.
In a fresh letter to chapters across the country on Tuesday, SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, said the extension followed a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, on September 19, 2025.
Ibrahim noted that the unions had, in a previous letter dated June 18, 2025, raised issues including what they described as “the unjust disbursement of earned allowances to university staff, and the non-payment of outstanding entitlements.” That letter, he recalled, prompted an earlier meeting with the Minister of Education on July 4.
According to the unions, Friday’s meeting with government representatives included the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), directors from the Ministries of Education and Labour, and other stakeholders.
“The meeting’s deliberations focused on our demands, but concrete resolutions of our requests have not been met, necessitating the continuation of discussions,” the JAC stated.
The unions said the latest decision was to give government more time to act.
“In view of this, the JAC of NASU and SSANU has resolved to extend the ultimatum by an additional two weeks, effective today. This extension provides the government with an opportunity to initiate the requisite processes to address our demands. If the government fails to do the needful within this extended period, the JAC will summarily proceed with a series of legitimate industrial actions,” the letter read.
The new deadline is expected to expire in early October, unless agreements are reached before then.
