As the 2027 general elections approach, elders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State have thrown their weight behind zoning the party’s next governorship ticket to Kwara North Senatorial District.
Speaking at a well-attended press conference in Ilorin on Friday, the Chairman of the APC Elders Caucus, Barrister Kunle Sulyman, said the decision followed extensive consultations across the three senatorial districts of the state.
“Gentlemen of the press, you may wish to recall that on November 21, 2022, at this same venue, we made our stand known on zoning. Then, we supported Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq from Kwara Central to complete two terms of eight years. This would give Kwara Central 20 years in total, while Kwara South has also produced a governor for eight years,” Sulyman said.
He added: “In the same vein, it is in the interest of fair play, equity, and justice that we, members of the Kwara APC Elders Caucus, unanimously agree that the next gubernatorial candidate for our great party should emerge from Kwara North Senatorial District.”
Call for fairness, caution to opposition
While stressing that every party member reserves the right to aspire for the top seat, Sulyman noted that past experience showed that such ambitions rarely succeeded outside the agreed zoning framework.
He urged residents affected by the state’s ongoing Urban Renewal Programme not to be swayed by opposition parties but to seek redress through appropriate government channels.
“For those aggrieved members of the public who might have complained about the effects of the Urban Renewal Programme, they are advised to seek redress through the appropriate quarters of government rather than allowing themselves to become agents of opposition,” he said.
Development and governance
The caucus commended Governor Abdulrazaq’s performance, listing what it described as “numerous physical and developmental projects across the state”.
“Every developmental policy, program, and project may pose initial but temporary discomfort,” the elders noted, insisting that the Urban Renewal Project was in line with the New Ilorin City Master Plan. They urged opposition parties to be “patriotic by supporting and joining hands with the laudable programmes of this administration for the progress of Kwara State.”
Support for Tinubu, call to voters
The APC elders also hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ongoing infrastructure projects in Kwara, pledging their unalloyed support for his government.
They further called on eligible voters in the state to participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
“Your vote is your weapon, and your voter’s card is your instrument towards electing good leaders,” they stressed.
