Court Stops EFCC From Arresting Anambra Archbishop Ibezim

An Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka has granted an interim injunction restraining the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from arresting the Archbishop of the Province of the Niger and Bishop of the Diocese of Awka, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim.

The order followed an ex-parte motion filed by the Archbishop’s counsel, B.E. Nwofor, SAN, seeking to bar the EFCC and its agents from taking any action against Ibezim pending further proceedings.

Justice F.I. Aniukwu, who presided over the matter, granted the injunction after reviewing the application under the Fundamental Human Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules, Section 46(1) of the 1999 Constitution, and the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

The court directed that the interim order would subsist until all parties have exchanged processes in relation to Motion on Notice No: A/1307M/2025 and the matter is heard or fixed for hearing. Unless renewed, the order will lapse 21 days from September 9, 2025.

The EFCC has not yet issued an official response to the ruling.
