National Sports Federation elections to hold October in Abuja

National Sports Federation elections will now take place in the first week of October in Abuja, following revisions to the earlier timetable that had scheduled the polls for September.

Our correspondent gathered that the decision was reached after a lengthy meeting at the National Sports Commission on Tuesday, which concluded that all zonal elections would be conducted at the end of September across the various zones before the general elections in the nation’s capital.

The NSC emphasised that all elections would be conducted by the commission and not by external parties.

The revised schedule represents an update to the earlier announcement by the National Sports Commission, which had initially set the 2025 National Sports Federations Board Elections for September 1 to 15 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The new timeline provides for a two-stage electoral process, with zonal elections serving as preliminaries to determine candidates who will proceed to the national elections in Abuja.

According to the NSC guidelines, the elections aim to uphold transparency, accountability, and good governance across Nigeria’s sports federations, in line with international best practices.

The process will be supervised by the NSC, with the Nigeria Olympic Committee serving as an independent observer to ensure credibility and transparency.

The electoral framework includes detailed procedures covering board composition, eligibility criteria, electoral regulations, petitions, appeals, and inauguration protocols.

The NSC has stressed that only qualified, credible, and passionate individuals will be elected to serve on the NSF boards, with strict adherence to outlined procedures and timelines required from all participating stakeholders.

The commission has urged all stakeholders to ensure compliance with the established guidelines to guarantee a credible and hitch-free election process.
