Lagos deploys youth ambassadors to champion environmental sustainability

Lagos State government has announced the adoption of new Environmental Ambassadors to champion environmental sustainability and roll out various environmental awareness and advocacy campaigns across the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, made this announcement while receiving the top five winners of the Lagos Has Talent competition – Climate Edition, at the ministry’s Alausa office, stating that their efforts would play a crucial role in achieving a sustainable environment through educational advocacy.

He recalled that the journey of Lagos Has Talent began in 2023 and was driven by the vision to amplify young voices in the climate space, gaining significant visibility in February 2024 with the unveiling of social media personality, Maryam Apaokagi, popularly known as Taooma, as the Youth Influencer for Climate Youth Engagement.

He said the ambassador’s awareness and sensitisation efforts would focus on education, institution of positive attitudinal changes, and implementation of sustainable practices, especially among the youth, on ways to mitigate the impact of climate change and promote proper waste disposal.

“We are thrilled to have these passionate individuals join our environment team. I am sure your various campaigns through poetry, art works, musical presentations, fashion accessories production and short film presentations will help us create a more sustainable future for our state,” he added.
