The Lagos State Government has explained reasons behind the increased flooding ravaging some areas across the state.
This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
As explained in the statement posted on his official X handle, the increased flash flooding was attributed to the increased tidal levels from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagos Lagoon.
This, according to Wahab is also known as ‘lock up’ and it occured when high tide temporarily prevents rainwater from discharging into the sea.
As a result, stormwater backs up, leading to flash floods in low-lying areas.
Wahab urged Lagos residents not to panic, stressing that the emergency response and drainage maintenance teams are actively monitoring the situation.
He further urged the avoid disposing waste into drains and gutters as such actions can block water flow and worsen flooding.
The statement read; “The Lagos State Government wishes to inform the public that the flash flooding currently being experienced in parts of the city is due to increased tidal levels from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagos Lagoon.
“This natural phenomenon, known as “lock up”, occurs when high tide temporarily prevents rainwater from discharging into the sea. As a result, stormwater backs up, leading to flash floods in low-lying areas. We assure you that once the tide recedes, within 1–2 hours after the rain stops, the floodwater will naturally drain off.
“We appeal to all residents to remain calm and avoid panic. Our emergency response and drainage maintenance teams are actively monitoring the situation.
“Please DO NOT dispose of waste into drains and gutters. Such actions block water flow and worsen flooding. Proper waste disposal is a civic responsibility we must all uphold to ensure a flood-resilient Lagos.
“Let’s continue to work together for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment.”
