The Supreme Court has on Thursday dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, over the outcome of the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo.
NPO Reported that Ighodalo had challenged the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which announced Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of that election.
Having initially challenged the result before the Edo election tribunal, the PDP governorship candidate was unsatisfied with the ruling of the tribunal which affirmed Okpebholo as the winner.
Ighodalo appealed the judgement before the Court of Appeal which also proved futile as the appellate court at its ruling on the 29th of May, reaffirmed Okpebholo’s victory.
Both courts dismissed Ighodalo’s petition, describing it as lacking merit.
The PDP candidate’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Ken Mozia, approached the Supreme Court, asking the apex court to overturn the judgments of the lower courts, which had upheld INEC’s declaration of Okpebholo as winner.
In the same vein, the Supreme Court at its ruling today dismissed the case while affirming Okpebholo’s victory at the poll.
