Flash Flood Alert: Lagos Government Urges Residents to Stay Vigilant Amid Heavy Rainfall

The Lagos State Government has issued a public alert, urging residents especially those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant as intense rainfall continues across the state.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that forecasts from the state’s weather monitoring stations indicate increased thunderstorms and widespread convective rainfall in the coming days. He added that satellite imagery shows dense cloud cover, predicting very heavy rainfall that may lead to flash floods across several parts of the state.

“All areas adjoining rivers and lagoons are particularly at risk of flash floods with strong currents,” Wahab warned.

The Commissioner advised residents to stay indoors during heavy downpours unless absolutely necessary and encouraged people to assess weather conditions carefully before heading out. He also called on parents and guardians to closely supervise their children, particularly those currently on mid-term holidays, warning against playing in the rain or swimming in floodwaters.

Wahab emphasized the danger of navigating flooded roads, urging both motorists and pedestrians to avoid such areas as vehicles could be submerged and lives endangered by swift currents.

He highlighted that, as a coastal state, Lagos often experiences rising water levels in its lagoon during prolonged rainfall, which can cause tidal locks and slow drainage flow—further intensifying flood risks. The Commissioner reiterated the importance of proper waste disposal, cautioning residents against dumping refuse in gutters and drains, which can clog drainage channels and worsen flooding.

While assuring the public that the state government maintains regular drainage clearing efforts throughout the year, Wahab noted that increased vigilance and collective responsibility are critical during periods of heavy rainfall.
