President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasized the importance of embracing criticism as a key component of democracy. Speaking during a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday to mark June 12 Democracy Day, the President maintained that democracy thrives on open dialogue and tolerance—even in the face of harsh words.
“Do not be afraid to hear an unkind word spoken against you,” Tinubu told lawmakers. “Some of the best advice a politician receives often comes from their fiercest critics. We must never seek imposed silence, as repressing dissent only breeds chaos and resentment, not the harmony true democracy promises.”
While advocating for tolerance, President Tinubu clarified that malicious slander and libel would not go unchecked. However, he stressed that no one should face injustice for simply criticizing him or writing negative reports.
“Call me names, call me whatever you will, and I will still call upon democracy to defend your right to do so,” he stated, urging public office holders not to fear dissent.
The President expressed confidence in the strength and resilience of Nigeria’s democratic journey, acknowledging its imperfections but highlighting the nation’s enduring spirit.
“Our nation is not perfect, but it is strong. Our democracy is not invincible, but it is alive. And that means our dream of a prosperous, happy nation is still within reach—and worth fighting for,” he said.
On the economic front, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to boosting productivity through targeted reforms and infrastructural development. He listed ongoing initiatives in roads, ports, rail, and power aimed at creating an enabling environment for industrial growth.
“Our tax and fiscal policy reforms are designed to simplify tax processes and eliminate multiple levies, allowing businesses to thrive,” he noted.
He also highlighted key reforms including tax exemptions for small businesses, the establishment of the Office of the Tax Ombudsman to protect taxpayers’ rights, and the integration of digital tools to enhance transparency and minimize waste.
In a nod to the Nigerian diaspora, Tinubu said new initiatives like the Diaspora Bond and Non-Resident BVN are helping mobilize overseas Nigerians for national development.
President Tinubu concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to delivering governance that works for all Nigerians, stressing that the ultimate goal is to create a more prosperous and inclusive society.
