Hon Dr. Lanre Oyegbola Sodipo Celebrates Democracy Day: A Call to Renew Our Commitment to Democratic Values

As Nigeria marks this year’s Democracy Day, the Executive Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Hon. Dr. Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo, has called on citizens to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and renew their commitment to the principles of good governance, civic engagement, and collective progress.

In a statement released on Thursday, Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo extended heartfelt greetings to the people of Abeokuta North and Nigerians across the country, describing Democracy Day as “a celebration of our shared values and the enduring spirit of a free and fair society.”

“Democracy is more than a system of governance,” he said. “It is the foundation upon which the voices of the people are heard, respected, and empowered to shape the future of our communities. Today is a time to reflect not just on how far we’ve come, but also on the work that lies ahead.”

Highlighting the importance of grassroots participation, the Chairman noted the progress made in Abeokuta North across key sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare, attributing these gains to active citizen involvement. However, he emphasized that the journey toward a more inclusive and developed society is ongoing.

“I urge our people to remain engaged, informed, and involved in local governance,” he stated. “True democracy flourishes when citizens play an active role in shaping the policies that impact their daily lives.”

Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo also paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, acknowledging the sacrifices made by those who fought to uphold freedom, justice, and equality.

“As we honor their legacies, let us be inspired to demand transparency, accountability, and excellence from those in public service,” he said. “Our democracy can only thrive when we all take ownership of it.”

He called for stronger collaboration among community leaders, civil society groups, youth bodies, and the private sector to build a society where every voice counts and every citizen has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national development.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us reaffirm our collective resolve to build a better future—one grounded in unity, peace, and progress for Abeokuta North, Ogun State, and all of Nigeria,” Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo concluded.

Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.
