The federal government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of the Democracy Day celebration. This announcement means Nigerians will enjoy two public holidays this week, as Monday was previously declared a public holiday for the Islamic Eid-el-Kabir festival.
The declaration was made by the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, in a statement released on Sunday. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, conveyed the holiday on behalf of the federal government and congratulated Nigerians for 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.
Tunji-Ojo emphasized that June 12 marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards a nation rooted in truth, justice, peace, and a promising future. He further highlighted the resilience, strength, and courage exhibited over the past 26 years, noting that the nation’s hope is stronger than ever.
The Minister also reiterated the Renewed Hope government’s commitment to upholding the universal values of democracy, which are based on the free will of the people in shaping Nigeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural systems.
The holiday applies nationwide, affecting both public and private sectors, with exceptions for essential services. Some private businesses, such as grocery stores and certain factories, are expected to remain operational on the public holiday.
