President Bola Tinubu is set to personally commission several landmark projects in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of activities marking his second year in office, which was celebrated on May 29.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike announced this during a media briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, following an inspection tour of completed infrastructure projects in the city centre.
According to Wike, the commissioning exercise will officially begin on Tuesday, June 10, immediately after the Eid-el-Kabir holidays. The first event will be the unveiling of the newly rehabilitated International Conference Centre.
“I can confirm to you that Mr. President has finally approved the commissioning of projects to start on the 10th of June, which is on Tuesday after the Salah holiday, and that will start with the International Conference Centre,” Wike stated.
President Tinubu is expected to personally inaugurate 10 major projects, including roads, public buildings, and key urban infrastructure within the FCT.
Vice President Kashim Shettima will represent the president in the commissioning of three additional projects, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen will each commission two projects on Tinubu’s behalf. Several of these projects are located in the FCT’s satellite towns.
“The President has agreed to commission one or two projects in the satellite towns. The Vice President and other top leaders will also visit these areas so that the people can, for the first time, feel the impact of governance directly from the federal level,” Wike said.
In total, 17 projects are ready for commissioning, but Wike noted that the FCT administration may handle the remaining ones due to time constraints.
The minister expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for allowing the FCT to showcase progress under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“We are very happy that Mr. President has given us an opportunity to contribute to the vision of the Renewed Hope Agenda. We’ve delivered on our promises, and the public’s positive reaction speaks volumes. We are grateful to God and to Mr. President for his unwavering support,” he said.
Wike also praised the National Assembly for their timely approval of the necessary budgetary allocations, which he described as crucial to the successful execution of the projects.
On the long-term management of the International Conference Centre, Wike disclosed that a formal agreement will be signed with Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to oversee the facility’s maintenance and ensure it meets international standards.
“This will not be business as usual. The era of mismanaging national assets is over. We will ensure professional maintenance under strict supervision,” he added.
