Olugbon Reaffirms Sacred Status of Alaafin Stool, Backs Revival of Oyo Obas’ Council

The Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Olushola Alao, has reaffirmed the historical and cultural significance of the Alaafin stool, describing it as sacred and deeply revered across Yorubaland.

Oba Alao made the remarks while hosting the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, at his palace in Orile-Igbon, Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State.

“The Alaafin stool predates the Oyo Empire and remains one of the most powerful and respected institutions in Yoruba land and beyond,” he said, stressing that history and tradition must be upheld despite modern societal changes.

Addressing the delay in reconstituting the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Alao expressed confidence in Governor Seyi Makinde’s commitment to reviving the council. He noted that discussions with the governor had been positive, with efforts ongoing to resolve the lingering issues.

“I am optimistic the council will be active again before the end of Governor Makinde’s tenure,” he said.

The Olugbon appreciated Oba Owoade for making Orile-Igbon his first stop on his palace tour and pledged continued support to strengthen unity between the Oyo Kingdom and Orile-Igbon.

In his response, the Alaafin commended Oba Alao for his role in preserving Yoruba history and culture and expressed gratitude for the warm reception from traditional rulers in Surulere LGA. He promised to promote peace and unity among traditional institutions across Yorubaland.
