Peter Obi Donates ₦20 Million, Food Items to Flood Victims in Niger State

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has shown strong solidarity with the victims of the recent devastating floods in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. During a visit on Monday, Obi donated ₦20 million and a trailer load of food items to support affected communities.

The catastrophic flooding has claimed no fewer than 153 lives and displaced thousands. Obi stated that the financial assistance was aimed at aiding the injured and offering some relief to families mourning the loss of their loved ones.

Alongside the cash donation, Obi also provided a trailer filled with essential food supplies—such as rice, maize, and millet—to help ease the hardship faced by those affected.

Expressing his deep condolences to the Niger State government, Obi urged both national and international bodies to intervene and support efforts to alleviate the suffering caused by the disaster.

“I pray for the repose of the souls of the departed victims and for God to grant their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he said.

Obi was warmly received by the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba, who represented Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago. Garba praised Obi’s compassion and consistent advocacy for humanitarian causes, particularly his concern for victims of natural disasters.

The flood in Mokwa followed an earlier warning from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which had cautioned about potential flash floods in 15 states, including Niger. Prior to Obi’s visit, Fatima Umaru Bago, wife of the Niger State Governor, had also paid a visit to the affected communities to express support and sympathy.
