Substandard Roads No Longer Tolerable, Rep warns Contractors

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, Aderemi Oseni, has issued a warning to contractors handling road projects across the country, stressing that substandard work will no longer be tolerated.

Oseni, who represents Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency, spoke during the Oyo Federal Roads Stakeholders Engagement in Ibadan on Monday.

The event, held at Jogor Centre, was organized by the House Committee on Works.

The lawmaker emphasized that poor-quality work remains a major cause of road failures in Nigeria, adding that adherence to project specifications is critical to achieving durable road infrastructure.

Oseni said, “Some road failures are not caused by overloading but by poor-quality work from some contractors.

“If roads are built to specification, maintenance costs across the country will be significantly reduced.

“Deviating from these standards leads to high maintenance expenses and deteriorating infrastructure.”

Commending the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, Oseni noted that “Oyo State had been given an unprecedented advantage with lawmakers from the state leading both the House Committees on Works and FERMA.”

He also praised Minister of Works, David Umahi, for introducing reforms in road infrastructure management, highlighting visible improvements nationwide.

“We can all see a remarkable shift from the past in our road infrastructure.

“The reforms are taking shape, and we must leverage this opportunity to ensure the best outcomes for our state and the nation,” Oseni remarked.

The FERMA chairman further lauded President Bola Tinubu for implementing policies that are gradually transforming key sectors, including infrastructure.

“We have a President, Asiwaju Tinubu, who is committed to fixing Nigeria’s challenges.

“His approach to road infrastructure development is a testament to that commitment,” he added.

Oseni stated that his remarks serve as a clear message to contractors that subpar projects will not be tolerated under the new administration’s drive for improved infrastructure.
