Lagos govt reopens Maryland/Ojota Bridge after completing repairs.

The Lagos State Government has reopened the Ojota and Maryland sections of the Odo Iya Alaro Bridge to traffic. At the reopening on September 16, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat highlighted the state’s zero-tolerance policy for infrastructure abuse, addressing frequent theft of manhole covers and other bridge components.

To combat this issue, the government has replaced metal manhole covers with fiber ones, which are less valuable to thieves. Hamzat stressed that theft of these covers will lead to prosecution, emphasizing their role in ensuring safety and preventing accidents.

Hamzat also noted the administration’s commitment to improving road and bridge infrastructure to reduce travel time, enhance connectivity, and ensure commuter safety. Special Adviser Olufemi Daramola mentioned that the bridge was completed ahead of schedule to relieve road users, while Commissioner for Works Hon. Oluwasegun Osiyemi expressed satisfaction with the early completion, which took less than two months. Work on the bridge began on July 22 and was finished on August 23 for the Ojota-bound side, and September 13 for the Maryland-bound section.
