Police in Toronto, Canada, have arrested a Nigerian woman, Amaka Sunnberger, who made a viral video threatening to kill Nigerians of Yoruba and Benin descent. According to a police statement, she was taken into custody on Sunday, September 1, and will be charged in court on Monday.
The statement noted that Sunnberger has been charged with making threats and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Monday, September 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in courtroom 107. The investigation is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offense.
Her remarks ignited widespread outrage, leading the Nigerian House of Representatives to call for her prosecution. Nigerian lawmakers had written to the Canadian government, urging them to prosecute Sunnberger for inciting violence and genocide against the Yoruba and Benin communities.
Similarly, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had earlier written a petition to Honourable Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton, Canada, regarding the case.
