The Yoruba community in Enugu appoints an Oba.

The Yoruba community in Enugu State has unanimously chosen Alhaji Abdulazeez Adebayo as its traditional ruler. Adebayo, from Osun State, is the first Oba in the history of the Yoruba community in Enugu. During a community meeting in Enugu on Tuesday, the new traditional ruler stated that the Yoruba community in Enugu consists of members from the states of Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Lagos, Kogi, and Kwara.

Adebayo revealed that Yoruba ethnic nationality in the state comprised Ibadan Progressive Union, Ede Descendants, as well as Olateji, Ekiti, Ondo, Ilorin Descendant Unions.

“Today, the Ibadan Progressive Union decided to associate and join the  Progressive Yoruba Community in Enugu State since what we have been yearning for many years–to have an Oba– has come true.’’

Regarding his selection, Adebayo explained that the process involved finding someone with a strong track record, good behavior, and the ability to care for the community. The chosen individual also needed to be trustworthy and capable of representing the Yoruba people well in the state.

He further detailed that the call for a Yoruba Oba in Enugu began with several people expressing interest in the position in 2018. After screening the candidates, a report on the aspirants was presented to the Yoruba community. Adebayo also noted that the community experienced the loss of three individuals while waiting to select their Oba.
