The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Adegoke Fayoade, has initiated an investigation into the bribery allegation leveled against the Epe Divisional Police Officer, Godwin Okoruwa.
Furthermore, the command has directed the officer to “step aside” pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Benjamin Humdeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, communicated this development through his X account @BenHundeyin on Monday, responding to a publication titled “Lagos DPO Queried For Accepting N2m To Release Suspected Armed Robbers,” by an online medium on Sunday.
It was reported that Fayoade had allegedly issued a query to Okoruwa for reportedly accepting a N2 million cheque from a monarch in Epe to release four suspected armed robbers who had been apprehended by detectives from the division during a stop-and-search operation.
The suspects were allegedly undergoing investigation when the monarch purportedly contacted Okoruwa, asserting that the apprehended individuals were his associates and not involved in armed robbery.
However, Hundeyin refuted the claim that the Commissioner of Police had issued a query to the DPO regarding the allegation.
He wrote, “CP Adegoke Fayoade has ordered an investigation into the allegations contained in this publication. Pending the outcome of the investigation and on the instructions of the CP, the DPO has stepped aside.
“Meanwhile, we can confirm that the suspects were transferred to the headquarters the same day they were arrested, and there is no truth in the claim that the DPO was queried.”
