I’m not a gospel artiste – Timi Dakolo makes clear

Timi Dakolo, a well-known singer and songwriter from Nigeria, has made it clear that he is not a gospel musician.

He emphasized that he cannot be confined to a single genre by pointing out the diversity of his musical taste.

The “Iyawo mi” crooner talked in a recent interview with OAP Dotun of Cool FM Nigeria in Lagos.

“People kind of categorize you into gospel,” the host questioned. Do you perform gospel music?

In response, Dakolo said, “I am not by any means. I ask everyone I meet, “Is there a gospel architect or banker?” You made the decision to pursue that course of action. Art is art.

“I’m only an artist,” Actually, I create art rather than being an artist. You are able to categorize my music by genre. I’m not just a vocalist for weddings. “Wish Me Well” and “Great Nation” are not tunes for a wedding. You’ll hear it [my diversity] if you listen to my most recent record. The song “Men of the South” is about cultural pride.

He continued, saying that as a Christian, he gives performances at gospel gatherings.
