The Nigerian musician Stanley Omah Didia, better known by his stage name Omah Lay, has responded to admirers who have labeled his sound as “Afro-depression.”
The singer recently stated in an interview with The Beat FM in London, United Kingdom, that he doesn’t care what label is placed on his music as long as people are enjoying it.
He also expressed his dislike of getting into confrontations with fans since he values the delight his music gives to his listeners.
“I just make my music how I want to make it,” stated Omah Lay. I make every effort to avoid using titles and any other labels that the outside world tries to place on you. Because, as my husband used to say, “you can see clearly when the smoke clears.”
“So when you identify with those things [titles and tags] it just… I just make my music, I don’t care what anybody wants to tag it to enjoy it as long as you enjoy the music. If you feel like it’s Afro-depression, I am okay with that as long as you enjoy the music. Some other people would dance to it.
