The Nigerian singer and songwriter Tiwa Savage filed a plea alleging Grammy nominee David Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, had threatened and harassed her. The Lagos State Police Command has acknowledged receiving the appeal.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the public relations officer for the state police, announced on Tuesday that an inquiry into the claims had started.
He said, “I can confirm to you that we have received the petition and investigation has commenced.”
In the presently circulating petition, Savage accused Davido of using derogatory language in response to a post that featured both her and the singer’s baby mama, Sophia Momodu’s Instagram story.
The singer gave an explanation of her disappointment at Davido’s threats, telling him that she had supported his family throughout, particularly after he lost his son Ifeanyi.
Nevertheless, she stated that she thereafter received calls from others she knew asking questions about her relationship with Sophia and what she had done to annoy Davido.
The petition read in part, “On the 23rd of December, I made a post which included myself and Sophia Momodu’s Instagram Story- a feature on Instagram which allows you to put up a post for twenty-four hours, and MR. DAVID ADELEKE sent messages to my manager who’s also part of his management team that I shouldn’t worry and should never say a word to him and that I was taunting him, uttering very đisrespectful, malicious and derogatory words to my person.
“I responded to MR. DAVID ADELEKE’s message and told him not to reach out to me, especially as I feel like I have been there for him and his daughter, Imade, and more importantly when he lost his son. The events of that day have also led to a barrage of calls and messages from our mutual connections, asking me what I did to MR. DAVID ADELEKE that he’s upset that I chose to maintain a relationship with Imade’s mother, Sophia Momodu, who he’s having issues with and also painting the exchange to look like I was the aggressor.”
Savage further alleged that Davido told their mutual connections to warn her to be careful in Lagos as she was going to deal with her.
“He has also told our connections to warn me to ‘be careful in Lagos because he was going to f”k me up’. This is beginning to feel like some form of online and offline harassment not just to me but also members of my team. The action of MR. DAVID ADELEKE is unethical and can be viewed as a direct threat to my rights to life, privacy, and dignity of my person,” she added.
According to prior reports, both musicians unfollowed one another on Instagram on Saturday, January 6, 2024, creating a stir on social media.
Over the years, Davido and Savage were reported to have maintained a friendly relationship; their offspring, Imade Adeleke and Jamil Balogun, continued in their parents’ footsteps.
The two kids went to the same school together and were frequently spotted having fun together.
Various theories have been put up, though, on what would have caused the two well-known artists to unfollow one another. Some fans believe that Savage and Sophia’s growing friendship is the reason behind the move.
Prior to the petition, Davido received criticism from music executive Tunji Balogun, also referred to as Tee Billz, for allegedly insulting his family and for threatening to discipline him.
In a post on his Instagram page, Tee Billz specifically accused Davido of “bullying” his ex-wife, Tiwa Savage.
Davido’s manager, Asa Asika, was unreachable due to unconnected calls to his phone number. At the time this report was submitted, he had not responded to a text message that was sent to him.
